Video: PeeWee Gets an iPad from Steve Jobs

peewee got an ipad from steve jobs. i got one too, not from steve jobs, i bought mine. i haven’t had it long enough to really know what it will do for me or, i guess, what it will enable me to do but so far, i like it more than i expected to. i definitely like peewee’s secondary use of it as a tray. it’s very handy to say the least. i can do most of the things i would be doing at a desk with it, and seamlessly serve desserts and drinks. i’m serious, it goes from google to hors d’oeuvres in a split second. i like almost everything about it.

i read a book on it today. shutter island. downloaded it, read it, closed it in about 2 hours. i consumed it.  as they say of the ipad… it’s for consuming media. it saved a tree.

so yeah, i’m a fan of the ipad, an ipad user, a consumer of media. the experience of reading a book on the ipad though left a lot to be desired. reading a book feels warm, it feels cozy, it feels comforting. reading a book on the ipad feels empty. no cover art is downright depressing, no book of matches for a bookmark, no paper, no coffee table, no bookshelf. all of those things are of equal importance to me when i read. the excitement of turning the pages, seeing the book waiting for me if i take a break from reading. the warmth of the words on paper vs. the coolness of words on a screen. will digital books replace “real” books the way digital music did the cd?

no one loves instant gratification more than i do… so as of now, i’m torn. will it be hi-fi or lo-fi, real books that i can get inside when i read, save a tree or eat a beaver. it’s too soon to tell.
